Aquatic Freshwater Animals
Nature Zone • Life Zone • Rainforest River
When you enter Lotte World Aquarium, you will come across the dimly-lit zones where you can view the aquatic freshwater animals up-close.
As you walk past the tanks, it is worthwhile to take some time to check out the signs put up on the interesting facts of the freshwater fishes and animals.
Humphead Cichlid
Humphead Cichlid, originally a saltwater fish that lives in the sea but turned to live in the lake due to tectonic shifts. Cichilds hatch eggs by incubating them in their mouths.
Sturgeons
Sturgeons have lived since the era of dinosaur and is often mistaken for sharks. They are prized for caviar.
Crocodile
The crocodiles are cold-blooded animals. As such, it is rare to see the crocodiles move to prevent their body temperature from rising/falling; and partly to focus their energy on digesting their food (take days!).
💡It is believed you will be in good luck if you see a crocodile moves.
Electric Eel & Piranha
Electric Eel can grow up to 2m in length and has the ability to generate electricity (650-850V) at will to even stun a large crocodile or horse!
The Red-Bellied Piranha is known notoriously as the man-eating fish!
Axolotl (aka Mexican Salamander)
The smiling-face Mexican Salamanders with gills sticking out awkwardly from their heads are known for their amazing abilities to regenerate lost body parts!
Tropical River Tunnel
One of the highlights of the freshwater fish zone is the Tropical River Tunnel where you can view large-sized fishes like Cachama (90cm), Redtail Catfish (1.5m), Giant Pangasius (3m) and Pirarucu (5m) swimming around you.

💡Bella is the last surviving Beluga Whale out of the 3 Beluga Whales bought to Lotte World Aquarium upon its opening in 2014. Bella is pending to release back to its natural habitat.
💡Effective 14 December 2023, South Korea Aquariums are banned from buying new cetaceans (e.g. whales, dolphins) for display. However, the law does not apply to animals already in captivity, such as Bella.
