Do you love seafood? King Crabs, Lobsters, Scallops? Do you want a place that is less touristy (and perhaps not as pricey) as Noryangjin Fish Market? If so, you may like to visit Garak Market, conveniently connected to Garak Market Station's exit 1/2.
Garak Market the first public wholesale market in Korea and occupies a fairly large area.
2 Main Sections (Garak Mall & Wholesale Market) of Garak Market
Garak Market is divided into 2 vastly different main sections, the muti-storey Garak Mall and the busy traditional Garak Wholesale Market.
Garak Market - Garak Mall (Recommended)
Garak Mall is Korea's largest food shopping mall with over 1,140 live seafood, fruits, vegetables, meat, dried seafood and other stores.
Most importantly, for foreign visitors to Garak Market is the live seafood stores located on the ground floor. You can pick your favourite seafood (king crabs recommended!) and bring it to any restaurant on the third floor for them to cook it for you, at additional charge.
💡TIPS:
-
Once you have purchased your favourite seafood on the ground floor, the store will have someone to bring you up to their designated restaurant on the 3rd floor. As such, if you are particular on the ambience or "look" of the restaurant, it is recommended to go up to Level 3 to take your pick first. If you walk into your desired restaurant 'empty-handed', the restaurant may even assign someone (probably Mandarin speaking if it works for you) to bring you 'shopping' on the ground floor, provide language translation with the stores (where applicable), bring up the live seafood for you and necessary cooking instructions (e.g. steam, raw, grilled) to the restaurant.
-
The cooking fee for grilled items is much higher.
-
The restaurant will typically serve you the king crab cut into pieces for easy eating. If not, get them to do it for you after your photo taking.
-
Check out the tasty fried rice on the crab shell too!
-
If you cannot finish all the fabulous food that you have ordered, you can get the restaurant to pack them up for take away.
-
Use pictures, google translate and of course, the 'international' hand signs if the restaurant do not speak your language. It is not difficult and part of the joy of travelling. 😉
